Join Bitwarden in celebrating open source with Hacktoberfest 2023

Hacktoberfest 2023, organized by DigitalOcean and DEV, runs throughout October, welcoming individuals to contribute to open source projects through pull requests. It's more than just coding; it's about community, learning, and meaningful contributions, aligning with the Bitwarden goal to foster community engagement and enhance the visibility of open source projects.

For this year’s Hacktoberfest, Bitwarden has planned a hackathon that incorporates multiple challenges involving Bitwarden Secrets Manager and Bitwarden Passwordless.dev, encouraging individuals to create innovative projects and integrations using existing capabilities. Participants can choose between one or more of the following challenges to pursue.

• Innovation and creativity: How creatively did you use Bitwarden products in your project?

• Security and compliance: How does your solution enhance security?

• Usability and documentation: Is your solution user-friendly and well-documented?

• Community impact: What positive impact did your participation have on the community?

• Challenge 1: Add passkey support using the Bitwarden Passwordless.dev API within an existing project or platform, such as a WordPress plugin, Umbraco, a community project or your personal website.

• Challenge 2: Build an SDK in your programming language or framework of choice, making passwordless authentication possible and easy to use within your preferred ecosystem.

• Challenge 3: Contribute to the community by creating tutorials, blog posts, or videos showcasing the use of Bitwarden Passwordless.dev or actively participate in the hackathon forum to assist other participants in their challenges. Then share your experiences and insights on social media to promote the hackathon and its goals.

Using Bitwarden Secrets Manager, self-host open source implementations of the following:

• DNS

• Web application

• Database

• Analytics software

• Financial software

• Other (come up with an idea of your own!) 

Bitwarden engineers will be available for Q&A sessions to help participants along the way. Each challenge has incentives in place to reward creativity and collaboration. The prizes for top projects are:

• Bitwarden Passwordless.dev:

  • 1st Place: $1,000

  • 2nd Place: $500

  • 3rd Place: $250

• Bitwarden Secrets Manager:

  • 1st Place: $1,000 + Bitwarden Secrets Manager T-Shirt

  • 2nd Place: $500 + Bitwarden Secrets Manager T-Shirt

  • 3rd Place: $250 + Bitwarden Secrets Manager T-Shirt

These prizes aim to encourage a competitive yet collaborative environment, enabling Bitwarden and the global community to make a meaningful impact during Hacktoberfest 2023. The deadline for project submissions is October 31, 2023.

• Various resources are available to help in the project journey. Comprehensive documentation, forums, and Q&A sessions with Bitwarden engineers are arranged to provide necessary guidance. Dedicated channels and scheduled sessions for technical support will be announced.

• Once your project is complete, follow the submission process outlined for Hacktoberfest, ensuring your work is shared before the October 31 deadline.

• Engage with the Bitwarden community and the broader Hacktoberfest cohort by sharing progress, asking questions, and offering insights on forums and social media platforms.
